Inauguration en hommage à Jean Béliveau

Eric Lapointe

The City of Québec and the Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec have unveiled a work of art paying tribute to the legendary hockey player Jean Béliveau. Titled Briser la glace (Breaking the Ice), the creation by sculptor Éric Lapointe kicks off the commemorative hockey walkway located at Place Jean-Béliveau.

“This work was created using anamorphosis, meaning its shape changes depending on the viewer’s position,” added Québec City Mayor Régis Labeaume. “When you stand on the puck embedded in the ground, a towering Jean Béliveau appears, and he transforms as you move. It’s a bold and, above all, spectacular creation. It marks the beginning of a walkway that will feature highly diverse works that are sure to make an impression.”

Briser la glace stands 28 feet tall and 30 feet deep. The sculpture’s highly graphic design evokes the player’s spectacular style. Its complex planes and angles mirror the sharp, quick direction changes of hockey.
