Complicated Flowers: Un récit de la femme à l’aquarelle

Ole Aakjaer’s first solo exhibition in Canada, presented by Galerie LeRoyer

Galerie LeRoyer is proud to present Danish artist Ole Aakjaer’s first solo exhibition in Canada, entitled Complicated Flowers: Le récit de la femme à l’aquarelle, on view from July 5th to July 28th. The artist will be present for the vernissage and book launch on July 5th, as well as for the signing of his new book Broken Porcelain - The Danish Watercolour Artist Ole Aakjaer, available for sale at the gallery.

Ole Aakjaer is an internationally-recognized watercolour artist, whose love of music, literature, films and photographs, along with his childhood dream of becoming a cartoonist, has inspired him to create a unique and vibrant style of paintings that leave a lasting impression. His medium of choice is one that is not easily tamed; watercolour has a life of its own, leaving behind imperfections that, like scars on the skin, add to the uniqueness and humanity of each piece. This complexity deepens the dramatic effect put forward by the artist with his use of abundant colourful hues and hidden symbolism, creating daring female portraits that cannot be forgotten.

These highly structured compositions unravel an entire world before the viewer, one filled with hidden messages. Like a map, the artwork guides us through the multilayered symbolism laden in each individual piece. Aakjaer portrays mysterious women that are sensual, alluring and untamed. Her piercing gaze is daring the viewer to uncover her secrets. She tells you a story, one that is personal to her own journey and that, as the viewer, you must decrypt with clues left by the artist. Like constellations, Aakjaer’s artwork shift in time and space, and require close attention to be unveiled by our own imagination.

Four years into his career, and 35 shows later, most of his artwork flies off the walls of the galleries and fairs’ around the world, to grace the ones of avid collectors or art lovers. Aakjaer is exhibited in prestigious galleries and fairs around the globe, such as Galleri Oxholm (Copenhagen), Galerie Bellechasse55 (Paris), Saatchi Gallery (London), Scope (Miami and New York), Art on Paper (New York), and of course Galerie LeRoyer (Montreal), as well as many others.

His first book Broken Porcelain - The Danish Watercolour Artist Ole Aakjaer, proposes an array of Aakjaer’s most iconic artwork, and various words by Jussi Adler-Olsen (Bestselling Danish author and art collector), Peder Stougaard (founder of the Danish Poster Museum, Aarhus, Denmark), Bertrand Scholler (owner of Galerie 55Bellechasse, Paris), as well as from Alexandra Conners (director at Galerie LeRoyer, Montréal), and many others.
