Marie-Josée Roy Artist - Represented by Galerie LeRoyer

Born in Trois Rivières, Québec, and working in the De Saguenay area, Marie-Joseé Roy has established herself as a successful artist on the Canadian scene after first gaining popularity within Montreal’s underground art scene. Marie-Josée Roy works as both a painter and sculptor, employing metal as her primary material. She has focused her artistic approach on breathing life into this otherwise inert medium.

In her latest body of work, the artist explores transitions and transformations, where unlikely unions are formed. Continuing her long-lasting dialogue with metal, the acclaimed Marie-Josée Roy plays on the strength of her chosen medium, using its permanence to depict the transitory nature of existence. Seemingly light as a feather, her works illustrate life as movement in process, sculpting the genesis of mankind.

This newest series employs techniques ranging from image transfer, painting, etching, plating, welding, and engraving. Within their grey chrysalis, the artist masterfully depicts their struggle to emerge from being bound by metal, leaving behind their protective cocoons. Marie-Josée Roy’s figures metamorphose into magnificent metallic human-butterflies.

Marie-Josée Roy received her bachelor of fine arts at the University of Québec in Trois-Rivières in 1992. She is actively showcasing her artwork in various exhibitions across Canada, as well as in cities such as New York, Boston, and Miami.
