Born in Cuernacava, Mexico in 1975, Luis Selem has lived most of his life in Sinaloa. He has a degree in Architecture from Lasalle University in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He also has a Bachelor of Visual Arts specializing in fine arts from the Autonomous University of Querétaro and received his Master's degree in Art from The Florence Academy of Art in Italy.
“Painting is my language, my way of life and my passion. That’s how it has been since we have discovered each other. My work is based on experiences lived during my childhood, connecting with that scared and fearful child before making my first move. My inner child is fearful and scared not by the change, but by the concern that his most precious objects (toys) will suffer some damage in the transfer from ideas to painting, hence my desire to wrap and preserve faces with paper."
He has participated in more than 50 group exhibitions, among which are "Masters of the imagination..." The Latin American fine art exhibition in New York City; USES, Arte Vivo, Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City and Group of sixteen Contemporary Art. He has also had solo exhibitions in important cultural spaces of Mexico and the United States; such as the historic lottery hall of the National lottery building in Mexico City, as well as in several South American countries.
He has also participated in important international contemporary art fairs such as KIAF, Korea International Art Fair Seoul Korea; ArtBo, Bogota International Art Fair, Bogota, Colombia; San Francisco Fine Art Fair. USA; Art Miami, Miami Fl. USA; Zona Maco Arte Contemporáneo, Monterrey NL. Mexico
His works are in various public and private collections, including the HBO collection, the pictorial collection of the SAT tax administration system, the pictorial collection of the Autonomous University of Querétaro, the pictorial collection of the Art Museum of Querétaro, the pictorial collection of Milenio group, amongst many others.
Traduction from Spanish | While Querétaro struggles to consolidate a professionalized cultural agenda, the work of this artist from Queretaro ventures into a first-rate internationalization process. Perfume bottles, decorative objects, shoes, bottles and more, all wrapped in newspaper or magazine sheets, are arranged in the corners of Luis Selem's study. They are his models or, as he puts it, "the intellectual part of the job." Six years ago, the painter began this series that has produced between 150 and 200 pieces to date, however it is a source of inspiration that still has a lot to exploit. «The idea arises from a childhood memory. I've been moving like thirty-somethings since I was conscious, I remember my mother told me "the removals have already arrived, have the newspaper and wrap your objects that you love the most so that they won't break in the boxes." And that is what the series is about, wrapping your most precious objects to preserve the feelings that you express in them, "he said in an interview with Codicegrafía.
Traduction from Spanish | The plastic artist Luis Selem, a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Querétaro, was recently invited to present some of his paintings at the El Campanario Club House, on the occasion of the relaunch of the Residencial Las Campanas. However, his work is also in demand internationally, since he currently has an exhibition at the Context Art Miami, where selected works from emerging, as well as avant-garde and contemporary artistic movements are shown. With a recap of his creations from 2009 to 2017, the artist recalls each of his stages and told CLASE magazine details about his stay in this important exhibition, as well as his beginnings in art. He remembers that it was when he was eight years old when his mother presented him with the oil paintings, thus giving him the freedom to paint the movement that he practices to this day: realism.
