Ole Aakjær, born in 1962, is an acclaimed watercolor and ink artist based in Copenhagen, known worldwide for his large-scale and deeply symbolic artworks that celebrate the strength and influence of women. His figurative paintings possess a distinct style characterized by vibrant colors and meaningful symbols, allowing him to convey profound psychological empathy while exploring the complexity and resilience of his subjects. Aakjær portrays women as both vulnerable and empowered, exuding sensuality, fearlessness, allure, and independence. Intricate ink work plays a significant role in his art, often adorning the female figures with sprawling tattoos. The texts and characters incorporated within his pieces draw inspiration from various sources, including music, literature, poetry, film, religion, psychology, and cartoons. Each element is meticulously applied with ink, hinting at the enigmatic thoughts, emotions, and secrets harbored by the women he portrays.
Aakjær's upbringing in a troubled home environment shaped his identity as a sensitive yet passionate child, constantly seeking stability and tranquility. To find escape from his tumultuous world, he turned to drawing and painting. Influenced by comic book creators such as Milo Manara, Enki Bilal, and Jean Giraud (known as Moebius), Aakjær fulfilled his childhood dream by publishing an album with Carlsen, Denmark's main comic book publisher in the mid-1980s. He later established an illustration studio in 1992. However, after 25 years as the CEO of his advertising and design agency, Aakjær experienced burnout creatively. Returning to the fascination and playfulness of his childhood, he embraced watercolor painting in 2014. Aakjær's mastery of techniques and his incorporation of oversized keywords, reminiscent of his previous career, set his large-scale watercolors apart. The combination of ink and watercolor demands precision and expertise, as there is no room for errors or corrections. The desired outcome must be achieved with the initial application, exemplifying the beauty of watercolor and Aakjær's artistry.
International recognition swiftly followed Aakjær's first solo exhibition, which completely sold out. Subsequent shows in Montreal, Oslo, Paris, and London also experienced the same success, propelling him to achieve an international breakthrough and secure permanent gallery representation in New York, Montreal, and Düsseldorf. He has had the honor of showcasing his work in two museum exhibitions: Vejle Kunstmuseum in Denmark in 2021 and the Diocesan Museum in Andria, Italy in 2022. Since 2014, Aakjær has participated in over 75 solo and group exhibitions. An upcoming museum exhibition at the Chinese Contemporary Art Museum in Chongqing, China is scheduled for 2024. Currently, the artist resides and creates in New York, further contributing to his artistic journey.
